Panzer General (1994) - Review

Review · Old Games News archive

Hex wargames had a reputation problem before 1994: they were for accountants with spreadsheets. Then SSI released Panzer General, and suddenly everyone's uncle was encircling Stalingrad.

The genius is the campaign structure. Each scenario flows into the next - forces survive, gain experience, and upgrade - so a lucky breakthrough in Poland becomes an elite panzer corps by Kursk. The economics of prestige points (buying replacements, not new tanks) makes every loss sting.

Design that copied itself

The formula spawned Pacific General, Star General, Fantasy General, and later the entire Panzer General lineage on consoles. Slitherine's Panzer Corps 2 is the modern inheritor, and it is honest about the debt.

Today

The original runs fine in DOSBox and remains perfectly readable. The AI cheats a little, as all 90s AI did, but the campaign pacing is still better than most releases this year.

Verdict: the game that proved wargaming could be a joy instead of homework.
